Wooden Victorian portable travelling campaign folding card table with labelled card slots

Early Victorian walnut wood folding card lap table with a hinged lid which opens to reveal labelled card slots on the "wings" and a central area for the games themselves. Designed for convenience, this rare item allowed people to play card games or engage in other small activities while seated comfortably.

Folding card tables became popular in the 18th century, particularly in England and America. They were commonly used in parlours for card games, which were a favoured pastime.
These tables were often made from high-quality woods such as mahogany, walnut, or cherry and beyond card games, these tables were often used for tea, writing, or other small activities, making them a functional piece of furniture in many homes.

Some portable folding card tables were designed as campaign furniture, used by military officers on the move. The robustness and simplicity of this piece's design shows that this was its intended purpose with functionality and portability being prioritised.

A wonderful collector's piece.
